Fall is upon us, which means apples are ripening and it's time to make applesauce! Applesauce is not something that I would pair with coffee but it is destined to be an ingredient in upcoming recipes, so I wanted to share with you how incredibly simple it is to make.
You are more than welcome to peel your apples before you slice and core them. If you cook the apples with their skins on, your sauce will be a little more tangy and also a more fibrous. You might have to experiment a try making sauce a few different ways to figure out how you like it best.
The type of apples you use is also up to you - the sweeter the apple, the sweeter the sauce.
Basic Applesauce ( V)
- Makes roughly 2 cups applesauce -
- 6-7 apples or roughly 1.2 lbs
- 1/4 cup water
- A squeeze of lemon
- cinnamon * optional/ to taste
- Peel, core and slice up apples and place them in a pot (*peeling is optional) with cinnamon.
- Add 1/4 cup of water, or at least enough water to cover the bottom of the pot.
- Simmer on low and stir occasional until the apples are cooked through and become mushy about 20 - 30 mins. Keep an eye on the pot and make sure all of the water does not boil out. If necessary add more water.
- Once the apples are cooked down, put the mush to a blender and mix until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.
